St. Peters, Sydney, New South Wales
Season: January 10, 2014 to March 08, 2014
Bard on the Beach is a new, exciting and vibrant Shakespeare company, which was formed to fill the gap left by the closing of ‘Shakespeare by the Sea’ (SBTS) after 25 years in Sydney, Australia.. Bard on the Beach was created by former actors of Shakespeare by the Sea who believe in entertainment and being true to Shakespeare’s language and raw performance style. Bard On The Beach continues this great tradition by bringing the magic and wonder of live outdoor Shakespeare performances to audiences over the summer, while they picnic under the stars at Balmoral Beach. And Bard On The Beach are striving to do things bigger and better than ever. With Artistic Director Patricia Rowling at the helm, since its inception in 2010, the company has moved from strength to strength, having already taken one of the shows on a regional tour of metro and country New South Wales, to extremely appreciative schools and community groups in some hard to reach places.
Currently underway is preparations for our 2013 Education and Community tour of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. Coming off the beach, this production will be reshaped and streamlined to accommodate 4 actors on the road for many weeks as they take in not only NSW, but this year also the Australian Capitol Territory (ACT). The tour will run from October 7th to November 8th 2013.
For 2014, we are very exciting to again be breaking new ground by adding another season in Sydney at not one but potentially another two venues, yet to be announced. We all are hopefully looking forward to these new ventures.
Our 2014 beach season at Balmoral, while many months away is already in preparation stages. This year, we will be performing ‘The Taming of The Shrew’ and ‘King Lear’, and both shows will be directed by Kyle Rowling. Kyle is an internationally renowned Fight Director, having worked on hundreds of TV and theatre productions both here and overseas as well as on such feature films as ‘Wanted’, ‘Troy’, and ‘Star Wars Eps 2 and 3′. Bard On The Beach is looking forward to not only seeing Kyle’s directorial prowess in action with these two great classics, but also to some awesome ‘swashbuckling’ fun this season (hint hint!).
Our main hope and aim for the year to come is some SUNSHINE. One of the imperatives to all good OUTDOOR DRAMA!
